6th November 2025 – (Taipei) Taipei City’s Department of Information and Tourism has withdrawn all promotional materials featuring Malaysian singer Namewee after Malaysian police upgraded their investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh to a murder case on 4th November.
The bureau confirmed the decision in a statement on Wednesday, stressing the city government’s longstanding zero-tolerance stance on drugs. It said all Namewee-related assets have been taken down and that a formal request has been issued to his affiliated company to remove from the Namewee YouTube channel all tourism videos produced in collaboration with the department.
During a routine Taipei City Council session, councillor Hsu Li-hsin questioned whether Namewee remained an appropriate figure to promote the capital. In response, tourism commissioner Yu Hsiang noted that the collaboration occurred before the current case arose and that, at the time, Namewee enjoyed popularity with audiences, prompting the bureau to invite him to help promote Taipei.
The department clarified that the partnership was an older initiative predating 2021, aimed at marketing Taipei to audiences in Singapore and Malaysia due to Namewee’s strong recognition in those markets. It added that its cooperation with the artist concluded in 2021 and there are no ongoing projects.
