15th December 2025 – (Los Angeles) Rob Reiner, the acclaimed filmmaker and actor, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner have been found dead at their Brentwood residence, law enforcement sources told TMZ on Sunday. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division has opened an investigation.
Emergency dispatch audio recorded a call for additional units to the property at around 3.30pm, though no further details about the scene were disclosed over the air. Sources said both victims suffered lacerations consistent with a knife. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday evening.
Reiner, 78, was the son of comedy icon Carl Reiner, who died in 2020. He began his career as a comedy writer in the late 1960s, partnering with Steve Martin on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He rose to national prominence in the 1970s as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in All in the Family, earning two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series across the show’s 205-episode run before it concluded in 1979.
He transitioned to directing with the cult classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, and went on to helm a string of era-defining films, including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President and The Bucket List. A sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, also sits among his later credits.
Reiner met Michele Singer, a photographer, while directing When Harry Met Sally…, and the couple married in 1989. Their relationship famously influenced the film’s ending, which he revised so the lead characters, played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, end up together. The pair shared more than 35 years of marriage.
In addition to his directing career, Reiner remained active on screen, with recent appearances including Bob, the father of Jess, in New Girl, and a role in season four of The Bear as businessman Albert Schnur. He was also an outspoken political commentator on social media, frequently weighing in on contentious topics and, ahead of the 2020 U.S. election, stating he would back any candidate capable of defeating then-President Donald Trump.
According to IMDb, Reiner had one completed project pending release: a concert film featuring the fictional band Spinal Tap performing at Stonehenge alongside major music acts, due out next year.
Michele Singer Reiner was 68. The couple had three children together — Jake, Nick and Romy — and Rob had a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to director Penny Marshall.
The LAPD has appealed for information as investigations continue.
