28th October 2025 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong screen stalwart Benz Hui Shiu-hung has died peacefully at the age of 76. His family, through close friend and television host Luisa Maria Leitão, confirmed that the actor passed away in the early hours today from multiple organ failure brought on by cancer.

In recent years, Hui greatly scaled back his on-screen work and relocated to Singapore with his family to enjoy a semi-retired life. Long regarded in the industry as a devoted father, he embraced his new role as a father-in-law after his daughter, Charmaine, married late last year. He devoted considerable time and resources to supporting her ambitions, investing over ten million Hong Kong dollars to help her establish several cafés and bakeries in Singapore.

The news followed a period of concern about Hui’s health. On Sunday, actress Charmaine Sheh, who has frequently collaborated with him, grew tearful when asked about his condition at a public event, saying she had been aware of developments and planned to visit him. Local media reported that Hui had been hospitalised in a critical state, with fellow entertainers including Michael Miu, Bosco Wong and Luisa Maria Leitão seen arriving at the hospital with sombre expressions.

Sheh, who regards Hui as a father figure, has worked with him on a string of popular dramas including You’re Hired (2009), Line Walker (2014), Modern Dynasty (2022 and 2024) and the forthcoming series Themis. She has previously spoken about confiding in him off set.

Born on 4 November 1948, Hui launched his acting career in 1972, first appearing in Chang Cheh’s film Young People before building a prolific portfolio across television and cinema. He amassed credits in more than 165 films and earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 19th Hong Kong Film Awards for his turn as Inspector Wong in Running Out of Time (1999). Affectionately nicknamed “Benz” — a moniker inspired by Mercedes‑Benz — he became known for scene-stealing supporting roles that often outlived the productions themselves.
