16th December 2025 – (Los Angeles) Los Angeles police have arrested Nick Reiner, 32, on suspicion of murdering his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer-photographer Michele Singer Reiner, after their bodies were discovered at the couple’s Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon. He is being held in Los Angeles County without bail while prosecutors consider charges.
According to officials, the case is expected to be submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney on Tuesday, with a charging deadline likely by late Wednesday based on the current custody timeline. Two people briefed on the inquiry, who were not authorised to speak publicly, said the victims had suffered stab wounds.
The arrest followed a weekend in which Nick Reiner was seen at a holiday gathering the night before the discovery. Two attendees, speaking anonymously to preserve relationships, said he argued with his father during the event and that his behaviour unsettled guests. One attendee recalled Rob Reiner admonishing his son for acting inappropriately; the argument’s substance was unclear.
Police attention turned swiftly to the couple’s son, in part due to his past struggles with substance abuse and periods of homelessness, which he has previously discussed. He collaborated with his father on the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” drawing on those experiences. On Monday, private security guarded the family’s Brentwood property, where “no trespassing” notices were displayed at the gates.
Rob Reiner, 78, first gained fame as an actor in the landmark sitcom “All in the Family” before directing classics such as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride” and “When Harry Met Sally …”. He later became prominent in Democratic politics, advocating for marriage equality and other causes. Michele Singer Reiner, 70, began her career as a photographer and later produced films; the couple married in 1989 and had three children: Jake, Nick and Romy.
Reporters and television crews gathered outside the residence throughout Monday, while the street remained largely quiet save for a private security guard at the gate. There is no indication to date that politics played any role in the killings, despite online speculation. Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood and Democratic political circles, with colleagues praising Mr Reiner’s artistic legacy and public advocacy.
Prosecutors will determine formal charges following the police submission. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released further details about possible motives.
