10th November 2025 – (Sydney) The Australian automotive market has reached a significant milestone with electric vehicles achieving unprecedented sales figures during the third quarter of 2025. Industry data released by the Australian Automobile Association reveals battery electric vehicles captured 9.70% of new light vehicle sales between July and September, establishing a new market share record.
A total of 29,298 new battery electric vehicles were sold during this period, surpassing the previous record established in the preceding quarter. This represents a substantial increase from the 6.59% market share recorded during the corresponding period in 2024.
Concurrently, internal combustion engine vehicles recorded their poorest quarterly performance to date, accounting for just 69.65% of new sales. This continuing decline highlights the ongoing transition within the Australian automotive sector toward alternative powertrain technologies.
Hybrid vehicles also demonstrated strong market performance, with 49,929 units sold during the quarter. The 16.52% market share achieved by hybrid powertrains represents the second-highest level ever recorded. Industry analysis confirms that hybrid vehicles have maintained stronger sales than fully electric alternatives for nine consecutive quarters, indicating diverse consumer preferences within the evolving automotive landscape.
