Netflix’s globally popular Squid Game has reached its final chapter. Since its debut in 2021, Squid Game took the world by storm. As Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, Squid Game made history at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards by winning six major awards and setting a new milestone for Korean dramas on the international stage. The show’s creators also gained global recognition.

The second season premiered on December 26, 2023 and continued this momentum. Within 18 days, it climbed to third place in Netflix’s all-time most popular TV series rankings.

Season 3 will follow Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) as he re-enters the deadly game with a renewed purpose following the loss of a close friend. Meanwhile, the mysterious Front Man who secretly operates within the game and other surviving contestants from past rounds will face their final judgement.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk officially announced the third season would conclude the series. There are currently no plans to make a fourth season. This was a mutual decision with Netflix when we decided to produce Season 3. Viewers will feel the story is complete after watching Season 3 and there’s no need to continue further.”

However, Hwang Dong Hyuk has not entirely shut the door on the Squid Game universe. He made sure to not close any doors as he said cautiously, “I’m not saying I will never return to work on the Squid Game world again. Although I currently have other film projects in mind, if the right opportunity comes along, I would be open to making spin-offs. While working on the series, I sometimes wonder, ‘What are those characters doing at this moment in time?’ That leads me to want to expand their stories further. Perhaps in the future, we may bring some of their backstories to the screen.”
