Song Joong Ki’s latest film Bogota: City of the Lost suffered a major setback at the South Korean box office. Since its release on December 31 last year, the film has only attracted 400,000 viewers as of July 15, which is far below the break-even point of 3.5 million viewers. The box office was only $2.7 million US dollars.
Bogota: City of the Lost follows the story of Korean immigrants who find themselves in Bogota, Columbia in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Trying desperately to survive, Guk Hee (Song Joong Ki) gets involved with a smuggling ring and dangerous skirmishes with the law.
Bogota: City of the Lost started filming in 2020 in Columbia, but filming was interrupted due to the pandemic. Although filming concluded in 2021, the movie was not released until December 2024 in South Korea. Perhaps due to the long gap from production, interest Bogota: City of the Lost faded in traction.
Song Joong Ki and Lee Hee Jun recently attended a post-screening event for the film. Actor Lee Sung Min, who previously co-starred with Song Joong Ki in Reborn Rich, made a special guest appearance and expressed his disappointment, saying, “The parking lot was completely empty and I felt terrible. It seemed like there was no one in the theater. There could be many reasons, but when there’s no audience, actors feel really sad. Especially when a film is released in times like this. This is our job as actors, so please give us your support and help the film move forward.”
Song Joong Ki said, “I want to thank everyone who came to watch our movie. As actors, our role is to create good content that comforts those who are struggling and makes them laugh. I’ll continue to do my best.” By the end of his speech, he could not hold back his emotions and began to cry. “I feel like crying as I speak!” he said, before setting down the microphone.
