6th November 2025 – (Bangkok) A significant number of Miss Universe contestants have withdrawn from a pre-pageant ceremony in Thailand following a public confrontation between the host nation’s director and Miss Mexico. The incident, which was live-streamed, prompted a formal condemnation from the Miss Universe Organisation and led to widespread solidarity among delegates.
During the event in Bangkok, Miss Universe Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly reprimanded Fatima Bosch for allegedly failing to meet promotional obligations. When Ms Bosch objected to the criticism, Mr Nawat escalated the situation by summoning security and threatening disqualification for any contestants supporting her position.
The majority of delegates present chose to stand in solidarity with Miss Mexico, with many subsequently leaving the venue. Among those departing was the reigning Miss Universe, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark, who stated that the treatment of a fellow contestant was “beyond disrespectful” and contrary to the principles of women’s rights.
The Miss Universe Organisation responded decisively, dispatching a delegation of international executives to assume control of the competition’s management. In an official statement, MUO President Raul Rocha characterised Mr Nawat’s behaviour as a “serious abuse” of power involving the intimidation of a “defenceless woman.” The organisation confirmed it would pursue legal actions against the Thai official and limit his future involvement in the pageant.
Mr Nawat subsequently issued a public apology via social media, expressing regret to all affected contestants. Despite the controversy, the competition schedule has proceeded with a welcome event in Bangkok, maintaining the timeline toward the final ceremony scheduled for 21st November.
