Sharing his gratefulness on meeting his wife on a recent radio show, TV King Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) thought he would still be single at 60 if not for Phoebe Sin (單文柔), who gave him a complete family with their six-year-old daughter Quinta (陳諾瑤)! His neighbor, golf buddy and good friend, host Benjamin Lee (李有毅) then warmly praised Ruco as having “the build of an athlete, the soul of an actor, the love of a partner, and the heart of a father”.
On Learning Resilience Through Sports
Ruco shared that he taught himself table tennis out of interest as a child, and started competing in inter-district tournaments at the age of 12, later joining a sports academy on a coach’s recommendation and was selected for the Hong Kong representative team after five years’ training. In retrospect, Ruco shared “From Secondary 1 to 5, I was with the youth team. My world broadened in Sec 5, especially when I had to face the national team—we simply couldn’t compete, the gap was too wide because of the training standards. Describing sport as “a great test of endurance and resilience” which taught him how to face defeats in life, Ruco’s mantra became, ‘When you’re no longer afraid of losing, that’s when you have a chance to win.”
However, Ruco knew his limits, choosing to give up table tennis and return to school, since continuing with sports would have meant leaving home to train in mainland China or elsewhere. Joining the entertainment industry upon graduation, he eventually rose to the status of TV King.
On Meeting Phoebe and Doting on Little Piggy
During the show, Ben revealed that Ruco and Phoebe are often seen cycling together in their neighborhood, describing their relationship as “very romantic”! On family life, Ruco said,“Everyone knows Phoebe entered the Miss Hong Kong pageant, and afterward, I ‘privatized’ her,” Sharing his gratefulness, he added, “I’m really happy I met my wife during this stage of my life. I thought that chapter had passed, that I’d still be single in my 50s or 60s or just casually dating. So I’m very grateful to be here now—with both a partner and a child,”
Ben then testified to Ruco’s gentle and patient ways when teaching Phoebe how to play golf, calling him a “model husband”. The latter explained it was important to be careful, as the sport can easily cause injuries which might cause problems with everyday activities.
While daughters usually take after their dad, the devoted dad hopes Little Piggy will take after her mom in terms of personality traits, instead of himself! Describing their parenting style where they frequently utter “I love you” in front of their daughter, Ruco wrapped and said, “Before I met my wife, I rarely said it, only during filming. But now it’s become part of my daily speech. She’s really rubbed off on me. I hope our daughter picks it up too.”
