18th December 2025 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong actress‑turned‑wine entrepreneur Bernice Liu has drawn fresh attention online after students revealed she has been serving as a guest lecturer at a university, with some social media users remarking that they almost failed to recognise her due to a fuller figure.
Liu, who rose to fame as a TVB artiste, has in recent years successfully reinvented herself in the wine industry. After obtaining professional sommelier qualifications, she began producing her own red and white wines, later becoming a wine judge and investing tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars in purchasing a vineyard in France. She has since built a reputation as a formidable businesswoman in the wine sector, and earlier this year was reportedly awarded a decoration by the French government in recognition of her contributions to promoting French wine.
Her academic role came to light when a student posted several photographs on social media showing Liu teaching in a classroom. The post noted that the day’s lecturer was “a Hong Kong TVB star”, adding that Liu had introduced herself before class as a former TVB actress who had appeared in numerous television dramas. The student further clarified that she was not a full‑time academic staff member but a specially invited lecturer.
According to the post, the session focused on wine investment, an area that aligns closely with Liu’s professional expertise. The student described the class as highly engaging and said many attendees felt they had gained substantial insights from her practical knowledge of the industry.
However, discussion in the comments section soon shifted towards Liu’s appearance. A number of netizens observed that she appeared slightly heavier than in her television days, with remarks such as, “Oh, it’s Bernice Liu – I didn’t recognise her,” “How did she get this chubby?” and “She has put on quite a bit of weight, but her features are still beautiful.” The original poster, however, stepped in to defend her, stressing that Liu looked good in person and suggesting that “the camera makes you look bigger” in photos.
Despite the chatter about her figure, many users expressed admiration for Liu’s career transition and her willingness to share her experience with students, noting that her shift from entertainment to academia and international wine business demonstrates a successful and multifaceted professional evolution.
